In its early years, Alpina established its core competence by adjusting carburettors and crankshafts to extract more power from BMW engines, elements that ultimately defined the company logo, which came into being in 1967.
Based on the BMW 5 Series (E60) 545i, the Alpina B5 was available as a sedan and station wagon. It uses a modified version of its 4.4-litre valvetronic V8 engine, including: a specific Alpina block manufactured by Steyr, a forged crankshaft and low-compression Mahle pistons. The engine retains the valvetronic system and uses a centrifugal compressor. The car uses a 6-speed “Switch Tronic” transmission manufactured by ZF Friedrichshafen.
